WORK CONTINUES ON ALZHEIMER'S VACCINE

By: Amelia Walton

Those affected by Alzheimer's disease have to come to terms with not only the its medical effects, but also its emotional and financial strain, which is traumatic for both the patient and family. To help them cope, a team of experts from the medical, legal and social work fields gathered last week to speak on "The Early Stage of Alzheimer's."The seminar, which was held in the office of the Staten Island chapter.

Alzheimer's is a devastating disorder of the brain's nerve cells that impairs memory, thinking, behavior and ultimately leads to death. The impact of Alzheimer's on individuals, families and our health care system makes the disease one of our nation's greatest medical, social and fiscal challenges. An estimated 6.5 Million Americans have Alzheimer's and the figure is estimated to touch 15 Million by 2020 as baby boomers age. Increasing age is the greatest risk factor for Alzheimer's. One in 10 individuals over 60 and nearly half of those over 80 are affected. Inherited forms of Alzheimer's disease can strike individuals as early as their 30s and 40s.

The silver lining is that finding a treatment that could delay onset could reduce the number of individuals with Alzheimer's disease by nearly 50 percent. In this context certain herbal combination Shilajit and Withania Somnifera show surprising results on Alzheimer's patients. They have been found to boost memory and enhance cognition in Alzheimer's patients. Shilajit is a mineral pitch found in Himalayan mountains and Withania Somnifera also known as Indian ginseng is a herb found in India. Withania somnifera has proven memory boosting effects and is also known to boost stamina.

Scientists Schliebs R.; Liebmann A.; Bhattacharya S.K.; Kumar A.; Ghosal S.; Bigl V. and R. Schliebs at Paul Flechsig Institute Brain Res., Department of Neurochemistry, University of Leipzig Germany have conclusively shown the cognition enhancing power of Shilajit and Withania Somnifera. They have shown that Shilajit and the defined extract from Withania somnifera (Indian Ginseng) affect preferentially events in the cortical and basal forebrain cholinergic signal transduction cascade. This partly explains the cognition-enhancing and memory-improving effects of extracts from Withania somnifera & Shilajit observed in animals and humans.

Shilajit and Withania somnifera could emerge as the wonder herbs in the treatment and management of Alzheimer's disease.

ALZHEIMER'S CURE TEAM'S GOAL. One scientist's curiosity may soon lead to the cause of -- and a cure for -- a devastating affliction that affects millions of people. It's his curiosity about the way the brain works that has earned Dr. Dave of Tarzana and a group of scientists a $7.9 million grant to continue their groundbreaking research on Alzheimer's disease. http://www.rudramani.com/alzheimers.html
